Arguments rage over whether to accuse Islamic State of genocide  from The Economist

Is it accurate or expedient to use the word “genocide” to describe the persecution of religious minorities by the terrorist group known as Islamic State?   Hypothetical as it might seem, that question is a real dilemma for people in high places in western Europe and America.   On January 20th, Federica Mogherini, the foreign-policy chief of the European Union, gave a speech to the European Parliament in which she deplored the suffering of Christians and other minority faiths in the Middle East but carefully stopped short of using the word genocide, to the great disappointment of many religious-freedom campaigners.

이런 행위를 '인종 청소'라고 불러야 할지 고민하는 유럽과 미국의 지도층의 딜레마를 기술하고 있습니다.

 

오늘의 구문은 다음과 같은 구조입니다.

문장이 형용사 'Hypothetical'로 시작되기 때문에 이상하게 보일 수 있습니다만,

이 구문은 다음과 같은 구조가 변형된 것입니다.

 

As it might seem hypothetical, that question is a real dilemma ...

 

그런데 실제 문장에서는 이런 구조보다 형용사 hypothetical가 앞에 나오는 구조를 사용합니다. 

 

이런 구문은 문맥에 따라 2가지로 해석이 됩니다.

 

첫번째 해석은 많은 문법책에서 '양보'라고 해석하는 방식으로, 다음처럼 '비록 ...이지만'과 같이 해석합니다.

(저는 '양보'라는 말보다 '대조'라는 말을 더 좋아하지만...)

 

Hypothetical as it might seem, that question is a real dilemma ...   비록 가설적으로 보일지 모르지만, 그 문제는 ...에게 정말로 하나의 딜레마이다.

 

두번째 해석은 다음과 같은 구조에서 볼 수 있는 바와 같이 '이유'로 해석하는 방식입니다.

 

Silent as it was in the forest, she was very scared at every sound of the birds.   숲 속은 조용했기 때문에  그녀는 새들의 소리에도 매우 겁이 났다.

 

끝으로 한가지 더....

 

다음 구문 'to + the great disappointment'는 '매우 실망스럽게도'와 같이 해석된다는 점을 기억해두시길...

 

to the great disappointment of many religious-freedom campaigners.  종교적 자유를 위해 일하는 많은 운동가들에게 매우 실망스럽게도

 

이와 같이 [to + 감정을 나타내는 명사]의 구조는 주로 '...하게도'를 의미합니다.
