David Bowie from The Guardian

Bowie died of liver cancer on 10 January, two days after his 69th birthday. His last album, Blackstar, was released the same day.   His death caused an international outpouring of grief. Bowie’s music skyrocketed on the music streaming service Spotify, putting Life on Mars, Heroes, Let’s Dance and Blackstar, all into the site’s top-10 chart within 24 hours of the announcement of his death.   David Bowie left an estate of around $100m to his wife, Iman, and his two children, and stipulated that he be cremated and his ashes scattered in Bali, according to his will.   The document, filed on Friday afternoon in a New York courthouse, also left $2m to his long-standing assistant Corinne Schwab and $1m to Marion Skene, a friend of Bowie’s and the nanny to his eldest child.

David Bowie는 반세기 이상 가수로서 명성을 날렸는데, 그의 69세 생일이 지난지 이틀 후에 간암으로

사망하였습니다. 같은 날 유작이 된 Black Star가 발매되었습니다.

 

오늘의 구문은 다음과 같은 특이한 구문입니다.

 

David Bowie stipulated that he be cremated and his ashes scattered in Bali

 

문제는 that 절 이하에 동사가 was나 is, 혹은 will be 같은 형태가 아니라 be 하나만 쓰였다는 점입니다.

 

왜 이런 원형 동사 be가 나올까요?

 

그 이유는 that 앞에 나오는 동사 stipulate에 있습니다.

 

이것은 '(that 이하를) 앞으로 해줄 것을 요구하는 것'을 의미하는데,

아직 실제로 이루어진 일이 아니기 때문에 was나 is  등을 쓸 수 없습니다.

그래서 원형 동사 be를 쓰게 되었습니다.

 

이런 구문은 stipulate 외에 insist (주장하다) 등이 쓰인 경우에도 종종 발견할 수 있습니다.

 

끝으로 한가지 더 눈여겨 보아야 할 것은 뒷부분에 나오는 scattered입니다.

 

주어가 his ashes인에 바로 뒤에 scattered가 나오니 이상하게 보입니다.

왜냐면 다음과 같이 scattered 앞에 be가 나와 수동태가 되어야 하기 때문입니다.

그런데 실제 글에서 scattered 앞에 be가 없는 이유는,

cremated 앞에 be가 이미 나오기 때문에 반복하는 것을 피하기 위해서 be를 생략한 것입니다.
