As you advance in your career, you have more experience and more connections to draw on for networking.   But chances are you’ve also become a lot busier — as have the really successful people you’re now trying to meet.   How do you get the attention of people who get dozens of invitations per week and hundreds of emails per day?   And how do you find time to network with potential new clients or to recruit new employees when your calendar is packed?

오늘의 문장은 Harvard Business Review에서 인기 있는 글 가운데  한편인

"성공적인 사람들이 서로 정보를 공유하는 방법"에서 발췌한 다음과 같은 구문입니다. 

 

이 구문은 아주 쉬운 단어들로 이루어져 있지만, 구조가 다소 복잡합니다. 

 

as have the really successful people you’re now trying to meet.

 

 

 

그러나 가장 핵심적인 요소만 뽑으면, 이 구문의 뼈대는 다음과 같습니다.

  

as people have.

 

 

 

이렇게 표현하니 구문이 이상하게 보일 수 있습니다. 왜냐면 have만 있기 때문이죠.

 

그러면 이 구조는 무엇을 의미할까요?

다음처럼 앞에 나오는 've (have의 줄임꼴)의 뒷부분 become a lot busier가 같은 표현이기 때문에 생략된 것입니다.

  

... you’ve also become a lot busier —as people have become a lot busier.

 

 

 

이제 이 구문의 주어인 people을 the really successful로 수식하면, 다음과 같은 구문이 됩니다.

 

... you’ve also become a lot busier —as the really successful people have become a lot busier.

 

 

 

 

그 다음에 주어인 people을 다음과 같이 관계대명사 절 you’re now trying to meet로 뒤에서 수식합니다.

(you're 앞에 관계대명사 who (또는 that)는 meet의 목적어이기 때문에 생략되었음)

 

본문의 as 이하는 다음과 같은 구조와 의미를 갖는 구문입니다.

 

... you’ve also become a lot busier —as the really successful people you're now trying to meet have          become a lot busier.           (당신이 지금 만나려고 노력하는 정말로 성공적인 사람들이 매우 바쁜 것과           마찬가지로)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

이제 여기에서 앞에 나온 표현과 같기 때문에 become a lot busier를 생략하면 다음과 같은

구조가 됩니다.

 

... you’ve also become a lot busier —as the really successful people you're now trying to meet have.

 

 

 

 

위와 같은 구조의 문제점은 as 이하에서 주어가 동사 have에 비해서 너무 길다는 점입니다.

그래서 다음과 같이 주어와 동사의 위치를 바꾼 것이 본문에 나온 표현입니다.

 

... you’ve also become a lot busier —as have the really successful people you're now trying to meet.
