Many of their woes can be blamed on policies favouring the old over the young. Consider employment. In many countries, labour laws require firms to offer copious benefits and make it hard to lay workers off. That suits those with jobs, who tend to be older, but it makes firms reluctant to hire new staff. The losers are the young. In most regions, they are at least twice as likely as their elders to be unemployed. The early years of any career are the worst time to be idle, because these are when the work habits of a lifetime become ingrained. Those unemployed in their 20s typically still feel the “scarring” effects of lower income, as well as unhappiness, in their 50s.

오늘의 글은 전세계 젊은이들이 처한 어려운 현실에 대한 글입니다.

 

전반적으로 볼 때 그렇게 어려운 영어로 쓰인 글은 아닙니다.

 

그러나 이 글에 나오는 다음 문장의 경우 단어는 쉽지만, 

구조가 어떻게 이루어져 있는지 잘 분석되지 않을 수 있습니다.

 

they are at least twice as likely as their elders to be unemployed.

 

 

 

이런 문장을 분석하는 방법은 다음과 같이 문장에서 핵심적인 요소를 찾는 것입니다.      

      

they are likely to be unemployed.

 

 

 

이런 뼈대 속에 [ as ... as ...]로 이루어진 비교 구문을 삽입하면 다음과 같습니다.

 

they are as likely to be unemployed as their elders.

 

 

 

그런데 실제 글에서 다음과 같이 변했습니다. (부정사 to be 이하가 문장의 제일 뒤로 갔습니다)

 

they are as likely as their elders to be unemployed.

 

 

 

이 문장에서 likely는 부사가 아니라 are와 연결되는 형용사로 '가능한, 있음직한'을 의미합니다. 

 

이제 가능성이 2배나 높다는 것을 나타내기 위해 likely 앞에 twice를 넣어야 하는데,

비교를 나타내는 as가 있기 때문에 likely가 아니라 as 앞에 twice를 넣습니다. 

 

they are twice as likely as their elders to be unemployed.

 

 

 

끝으로 twice를 수식하기 위해서 바로 앞에 at least를 넣어보면, 다음과 같은 문장이 됩니다.

  

they are at least twice as likely as their elders to be unemployed.   → 그들 (젊은이들)은 그들의 연장자들에 비해서 최소한 2배나 실직할 가능성이 있다.
