Why Iowa is so important in the presidential election  from The Economist

Iowa is hardly representative of America in the 21st century.   It is a rural state that is sparsely populated by people who are overwhelmingly white, of German and Scandinavian stock, and conservatively Christian.   It is one of only ten states to still hold somewhat archaic caucuses, a system of local precinct meetings where voters decide openly which candidates they support and pick delegates who will vote at the state convention of each party.   The other 40 states hold primary elections in which voters cast secret ballots for their candidates and the results are used to work out the configuration of delegates at the nominating conventions.   Turnout at the caucuses in Iowa tends to be low and only about 1% of the nation’s delegates (who make the final pick of a party’s candidate in July) are chosen at the Iowa state convention.   Even so, the Iowa caucuses is where the voting contest for the presidency kicks off on February 1st and they serve as an early indication of who might win the nomination at the national conventions and who has little chance of success.

미국 선거에서 흔히 말하는 caucus는 당원들이 하는 투표이고, primary는 일반인도 참여하는 예비선거를 가리키는데, 아이오와주의 선거가 중요한 의미를 갖는 이유를 설명하는 글이기 때문에 우리의 상식을 풍부하게 해줄 것입니다.

 

오늘의 구문은 다음과 같은 구문입니다.

 

people who are overwhelmingly white, of German and Scandinavian stock, and conservatively Christian.

 

이 구문 가운데 people을 수식하는 who 이하 절에 나오는 of의 기능이 오늘 눈여겨볼 대상입니다.

 

설명을 간단하게 하기 위해서 위의 구조에서 관계대명사를 없애고 부사를 제거하면,

위의 구문은 다음과 같은 문장이 됩니다.

 

people are white, of German and Scandinavian stock, and Christian.

 

이 구문에서 과연 of는 왜 쓰였을까요?

 

열쇠는 white와 Christian에 있습니다. 이 둘은 형용사인데, 만약 of가 없다면, 이 문장은 다음과 같은 구조가 됩니다.

 

people     are       white,     German and Scandinavian stock, and Christian.  주어        동사     형용사          명사                                           and       형용사

 

뭔가 이상하지요?

 

어떤 대상들을 [A, B, and C]와 같이 나열할 때 같은 품사의 낱말을 열거하여야 합니다.

 

그런데 위의 구조에서 of가 없으면,

[형용사 (white) + 명사 (German and Scandinavian stock) + 형용사 (Christian)]과 같은 구조가 되어

이상하게 됩니다.

 

이런 경우 명사를 형용사로 만들기 위해 of를 사용합니다. 그러면 명사구가 형용사로 바뀝니다.

그래서 다음과 같은 구조가 나오는 것입니다.

 

people are white, of German and Scandinavian stock, and Christian.    사람들은 백인이고, 독일과 스칸디나비아 계열이며, 기독교인들이다.

 

이렇게 of로 형용사를 만드는 경우가 또 있냐구요?

 

있습니다.

 

다음과 같이 of를 쓰면 명사 importance가 형용사가 되어 important와 같은 의미를 갖게 됩니다.

 

people are of importance.  → People are important.
