Google’s parent company can do as it pleases, at least for now  from The Economist

Alphabet’s shares have surged, helping it overtake Apple to become the world’s largest listed company by market value.   Today Alphabet is a giant advertising company with the potential to become a giant in other sectors as well—although exactly which ones, no one is yet sure.   Almost all of the $75 billion in revenue it made last year came from advertising, most of it search advertising, where Google places ads relevant to what someone is looking for online.   The firm has around 70% of the global search market.

오늘의 글은 Goolge의 지주회사 (partent company)인 Alphabet이 급성장하여 Apple을 능가하는 기업이

된 것을 설명하는 The Economist의 기사 중 일부입니다.

 

(1) 위치가 바뀐 부분

 

이 글에서 우리에게 관심을 끄는 첫번째 부분은 다음과 같은 표현입니다.

 

although exactly which ones, no one is yet sure

 

이 구조는 아주 이상해보이지만, 다음과 같은 구조에서 which ones를 앞으로 옮긴 것이고... 

 

although no one is yet sure exactly which ones

 

여기에서 앞에 나오는 one은 '사람'을 의미하고,

 

which 뒤의 ones는 다음처럼 이 구조의 바로 앞에 나오는 sectors를 가리킵니다.

 

in other sectors as well—although exactly which ones, no one is yet sure.

 

 

(2) 명사가 나란히 있는 구문

 

다음으로 우리의 관심을 끄는 부분은 다음과 같은 부분입니다.

 

... came from advertising, most of it search advertising,

 

 

왜냐면 most of it와 search advertising은 모두 명사인데, 이것들이 나란히 나열되어 있기 때문입니다.

 

그러면 이 구조는 무엇을 의미할까요?

 

이 구문을 문법적으로 복원하면 다음과 같습니다.

 

... came from advertising, most of it coming from search advertising,

 

이런 구문이 본문처럼 변화된

 

첫번째 이유는 앞에 came from이 나와있기 때문에 같은 말을 반복하지 않기 위해서 이고,

 

두번째로 coming from이 나오는 이유는 다음처럼 came from이 생략되었다고 하면,

 

... came from advertising, most of it came from search advertising,

 

한 문장에 2개의 절이 있는데, 이 절 사이에  다음처럼 접속사 and가 없으면 어법에 맞지 않기 때문입니다.

 

... came from advertising, and most of it came from search advertising,

 

 그래서 coming from을 썼는데 이런 구조를 '독립분사구문'이라고 합니다.....
