오늘의 글은 SNS의 대표적 주자였던 Twitter가 처한 어려움에 대한 기사의 일부입니다. 

이 글에서 특히 눈여겨 보아야 할 구조는 동격절과 이것의 선행사가 떨어져 있는 부분입니다.

 

Twitter flatlines from The Economist   Three interrelated problems have been hampering Twitter’s growth.    (3개의 서로 얽힌 문제들이 트위터의 성장을 방해해왔고, 지금도 방해하고 있다 )

 

flatline : 끝장나다, 죽다

hamper : 방해하다, 훼방놓다

 

have been hampering은 현재완료진행형으로서 '과거에 시작되어 지금까지 방해했고, 지금도 방해한다'를

First, there has been too much turnover of executives. At least 20 have left in the past two years. This has made it impossible to decide and act on a consistent strategy.     (첫째, 경영자들이 너무나 많이 재편되었다. 최소한 20명이 지난 2년 동안 떠났다. 이것은 일관된전략 위에서 결정하고 행동하는 것을 불가능하게 만들었다)

 

turnover : 회전, 반전, 전복, 재편성

consistent : 일관된

strategy : 전략, 작전, 책략

 

This has made 바로 뒤의 it는 가목적어이고 imposisible는 목적보어, to decide 이하가 진목적어.

(부정사가 목적어일 경우 목적보어에 비해 상당히 길기 때문에 가목적어를 사용함.)

 

 

중요 구문 : 동격절의 위치

 

Second, the stream of reports about management turmoil has heightened an impression among some potential advertisers that the platform is not as mature as Facebook or Google, and thus is not worth taking as seriously.     (두번째, 경영 혼란에 관한 연속적인 보도는 잠재적 광고주들 사이에서 그 풀랫폼은 페이스북이나 구글만큼 잘 발달하지 않아 신중하게 생각해볼 가치가 없다는 인상을 높여주었다.)

 

stream : (사건 등의) 연속, 계속

turmoil : 혼란, 불안, 소동

heighten : 높이다

advertiser : 광고주, 광고인

mature : 성숙한, 잘 발달한

 

오늘의 글에서 핵심적으로 분석할 부분은 heightened의 목적어인 an impression과 that 이하의 절로

이 구문을 바꿔보면 다음과 같은데,

 

heightened an impression that the platform is not .... as seriously among some potential advertisers

 

an impression을 구체적으로 설명하는 것은 that에서부터 as seriously까지 이어지는 동격절인데, 이것이 제일 뒤에 나오는 이유는 among 이하보다 길기 때문임. (이와 같은 경우 분리시키는 것이 좀 더 나은 표현이기 때문에)

 

 

Third, new users find Twitter too fiddly compared with the alternatives (including Instagram and messaging services such as WhatsApp), which discourages them from continuing to use it.    (세번째, 새로운 사용자들은 다른 대안들(Instagram과 WhatsApp와 같은 메시지 서비스를 포함하여)에 비해서 트위터는 너무나 성가시다고 보는 것인데, 이것은 그들이 계속 그것을 사용하지 못하게 한다. )

 

fiddly : 성가신, 서투른

altenative : 다른 대안

 

which는 관계대명사로서 앞에 나오는 new user로 시작되는 절 전체를 가리킴.

Third, newbies find Twitter too complicated to use, which has prevented potential users from signing up for the service and sticking around. Twitter is in the challenging position of needing to keep its regular users happy while making changes to attract a new audience.
